Before you hire Shopify developers in India, work out which of three skill sets your store needs: theme work in Liquid, custom apps and Shopify Functions, or headless storefronts with Hydrogen. They overlap less than job titles suggest. Hiring a theme specialist for an app build, or a React developer for a theme, is the most common and most avoidable mistake.
Three Shopify skill sets behind one job title
Shopify has grown into a platform with several distinct development surfaces. Most experienced developers are strong in one or two of them.
Theme and Liquid developers
These developers work inside your storefront theme: Liquid templates, JSON templates and sections from Online Store 2.0, theme settings that merchandisers can edit, app blocks, and front-end performance. They use Shopify CLI for local development, keep the theme in Git through Shopify's GitHub integration, and run Theme Check before shipping.
Signs you need one
- Your team wants to rearrange pages and build landing pages without calling a developer each time.
- Product, collection or cart pages feel slow on mobile, especially on slower mobile networks.
- You have stacked several apps that inject scripts and the theme has become fragile.
App and Functions developers
This is backend work against Shopify's APIs. Developers here build custom or public apps with the Admin GraphQL API and webhooks, design embedded admin screens with Polaris and App Bridge, and write Shopify Functions to customize cart and checkout logic such as delivery and payment rules or order validation. With checkout.liquid retired in favor of Checkout Extensibility, and Shopify Scripts phased out in favor of Functions, Plus merchants increasingly need people who know these newer extension points.
Signs you need one
- You need to sync orders, stock or customers with an ERP, warehouse system or marketplace.
- Your checkout needs rules that no existing app handles cleanly.
- Staff copy data between the Shopify admin and spreadsheets every day.
Hydrogen and headless developers
Hydrogen is Shopify's React-based framework for custom storefronts, usually deployed on Shopify's Oxygen hosting and fed by the Storefront API. Headless suits brands that need content-heavy experiences, multiple storefronts sharing one catalog, or tight integration with a headless CMS. It also means owning more: routing, caching, SEO tags, analytics and every feature a theme gave you by default. Our explainer on headless commerce architecture covers those trade-offs in more depth.
Signs you need one
- Your design and content ambitions have outgrown what sections and blocks can express.
- You already have a React team that will maintain the storefront long term.
Which one does your store need? A quick decision path
- Is the problem what shoppers see? Start with a theme developer. Most stores can go much further on Online Store 2.0 than they think.
- Is the problem data, operations or checkout logic? You need an app and Functions developer, ideally one who has worked with your ERP or logistics provider.
- Have you hit a hard ceiling on the theme, and do you have a team ready to own a custom storefront long term? Only then consider Hydrogen.
- Is it a mix? A small team with one theme specialist and one app developer usually beats a single "full-stack Shopify" generalist.

Questions that separate specialists from generalists
Ask questions matched to the skill set you are hiring for. Strong candidates answer with specifics from their own stores.
For theme developers
- "How do you keep app-injected scripts from hurting Core Web Vitals?"
- "How would you structure sections so marketers can build a landing page without breaking layout?"
- "How do you handle theme updates when the store runs a customized copy of a vendor theme?"
For app and Functions developers
- "How do you handle Admin API rate limits and webhook retries when syncing a large catalog?"
- "When would you use a Function instead of an app that edits orders after checkout?"
- "How do you test checkout changes without disrupting live customers?"
For Hydrogen developers
- "How do you cache Storefront API responses while keeping prices and inventory accurate?"
- "How do you handle redirects, canonical tags and structured data when moving off a theme?"
Candidates who answer every question with "there's an app for that" are generalists. That is fine for small changes, but not for builds.
What to hand over when you hire Shopify developers in India
A clean start saves weeks. Prepare these before the first day:
- Collaborator or staff access with only the permissions needed. Never share the store owner login.
- A development store or duplicate theme so nothing is built directly on the live theme.
- A Git repository for theme code and any custom app, owned by your company account.
- A list of installed apps and what each one does, so nobody rebuilds something you already pay for.
- Your search baseline: top landing pages and rankings, so redesigns do not erase what already works. Our notes on Shopify SEO services in India explain what to protect.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Shopify Plus developer specifically?
Only if you are on Plus and need Plus-only capabilities, such as checkout UI extensions on the information, shipping and payment steps. For most themes and apps, the skills are the same.
Is Hydrogen better for SEO than a Shopify theme?
Not automatically. A well-built theme is already crawlable and fast. Hydrogen can perform well, but your team becomes responsible for rendering, metadata and redirects that the theme handled for you.
Can one developer handle both theme and app work?
For small stores with modest needs, yes. For anything involving integrations or checkout logic, test the app skills separately, because many strong theme developers have never shipped a production app.
How do I get a quote for my Shopify project?
Share your store, the problem and any deadlines. Scope, integrations and the skill set needed drive the effort far more than store size.
