Which Angular do you actually run? That question should come first when you hire Angular developers in India, because modern Angular, built on standalone components and signals, and legacy AngularJS 1.x are different frameworks that happen to share a name. Seniority shows in how a developer writes current Angular and how calmly they can move old code forward.
Modern Angular and legacy AngularJS are two different jobs
AngularJS reached the end of its long-term support at the end of 2021. Anything still running on it receives no official security fixes, so maintaining it is really risk management. Modern Angular, by contrast, ships major releases on a regular cadence and has changed substantially in recent versions.
If you maintain an AngularJS application
You need someone who understands scopes, digest cycles, directives and the module system well enough to stabilize the app, patch dependencies where possible and plan an exit. Pure modern-Angular developers often find this work frustrating, and that frustration shows in the code. Ask how they would harden the app in the meantime: a strict Content Security Policy, careful handling of any HTML bound into templates, and an inventory of third-party scripts that have stopped receiving updates.
If you build or extend a modern Angular application
You need someone fluent in the current idioms described below. Years of AngularJS experience alone do not transfer cleanly.
If you are doing both
You need a scarcer profile: a developer who can migrate. That is why migration experience makes such a useful hiring filter, covered further down.
Not sure which situation you are in, or how deep the legacy goes? Send us a short description of the app and we will help you frame the role before you post it.
Seniority signals in modern Angular code
Ask candidates to walk you through a recent component or service they wrote, then probe these areas.
Standalone components and the new template syntax
Standalone components are now the default, so NgModules should appear only where a library or legacy code demands them. Look for the built-in control flow blocks such as @if and @for with a track expression, and deferrable views with @defer to lazy-load heavy parts of a page.
Signals for state
A senior developer can explain when to use signal, computed and effect, why effects should be rare, and how signal-based inputs and model bindings simplify parent-child communication. They also know how signals make zoneless change detection possible, which recent Angular versions support, and what has to change in an app before Zone.js can be removed.
RxJS discipline
Signals have not replaced RxJS for streams of events, HTTP calls and complex async coordination. Watch for nested subscribes, subscriptions that never end and manual unsubscribe bookkeeping scattered through components.
Performance and rendering
Ask how they would speed up a slow dashboard. Credible answers include OnPush change detection or signals to limit re-checking, lazy-loaded routes, @defer for below-the-fold widgets, NgOptimizedImage for images and server-side rendering with hydration through Angular's SSR package when first load or SEO matters. Someone who reaches for a profiler before rewriting code is usually the one you want.
Code review prompts that expose habits
- Show a search box built with nested subscribes and ask them to fix it. Expect switchMap, debounceTime and distinctUntilChanged.
- Ask how they clean up subscriptions. Good answers mention the async pipe, takeUntilDestroyed and converting with toSignal.
- Ask when they would keep a value as an Observable rather than a signal, and why.
Migration skills as a hiring filter
Whether you are leaving AngularJS behind or catching up from an old Angular major version, migration is where experience pays for itself.
Upgrading across modern versions
Candidates should describe using ng update, reading the official update guide, running schematics for standalone and control flow conversion, and upgrading one major version at a time with the test suite green at each step.
Moving off AngularJS
The two realistic paths are a hybrid application, where AngularJS and Angular run side by side and screens move across gradually, or a route-by-route rewrite behind a shared shell. For larger platforms, the shell approach often overlaps with micro-frontend architecture.
Questions that test migration judgment
- How would you decide which screens move first?
- How do you keep shipping features while the migration runs?
- What test coverage do you want in place before touching anything?
A structured way to hire Angular developers in India
- Write the role around your version. State the Angular major version, the state approach and whether legacy code is involved.
- Screen with a code walkthrough of the candidate's own recent work rather than abstract questions.
- Run a paid task in a copy of your repository: a small feature plus one refactor of an older pattern.
- Check testing and accessibility. Component tests, a sensible end-to-end strategy and keyboard-friendly forms all count.
- Confirm continuity. The developer you assess should be the developer who joins.

Frequently asked questions
Can an Angular developer also maintain our AngularJS code?
Some can, but do not assume it. Ask for a specific example of AngularJS work, ideally a migration, and test it with a short exercise in your legacy code.
Is Angular still a good choice for new enterprise apps?
For large, form-heavy business applications with many developers, its opinionated structure, built-in tooling and TypeScript-first design remain strong advantages.
Can I hire Angular developers in India just for a version upgrade?
Yes. An upgrade is a well-bounded engagement: agree the target version, the libraries that must move with it and the test coverage required at each step, and ask for a short written log of every breaking change handled so your own team can maintain the result.
Should the developer also handle the backend?
Only if the role truly needs it. For a combined role, compare the profile in our guide to hiring full-stack developers in India.
