To hire React developers in India without regret, pick the engagement model first, then test the work itself: hooks, state design, rendering performance and testing habits. A résumé that lists React, Redux and Next.js says very little. A short, paid trial on a real ticket tells you almost everything you need before you commit.
If you already have a backlog and want a second opinion on how to staff it, send us a short brief and we will suggest the model that suits it.
Three ways to hire React developers in India
The model decides who manages the work, who owns quality and how quickly you can change course. Choose it before you read a single profile.
A dedicated developer
One engineer works only on your product, attends your stand-ups and follows your sprint rhythm. You direct the work day to day; the vendor handles employment, equipment and continuity.
Where it works
Long-lived products with a steady roadmap and an in-house lead who can review pull requests and set direction.
Staff augmentation
You add one or more engineers to an existing team for a defined period, usually to clear a backlog or cover a launch. Our guide to IT staff augmentation in Bangalore covers the contract terms worth negotiating.
Where it works
Teams with mature processes, a working CI pipeline and a codebase that a newcomer can be productive in within days rather than weeks.
A fixed-scope project
You buy an outcome instead of hours: a defined feature set, milestones and acceptance criteria. The vendor staffs, manages and reviews the work.
Where it works
New builds, redesigns and migrations where you have no front-end lead of your own, or where the scope is clear enough to write down.
What modern React work actually involves
React 19 changed everyday code. Actions and the useActionState hook handle form submissions, useOptimistic shows instant UI feedback, the use hook reads promises and context, and the React Compiler can memoize components automatically. Server Components arrive through frameworks such as the Next.js App Router rather than plain React. Someone who last shipped class components with lifecycle methods is a different hire from someone who has shipped on this stack, so ask which React version their last production app ran on and what they would change during an upgrade.
A React skills test that separates seniors from tutorial graduates
Skip trivia about the virtual DOM. Give candidates a small, slightly broken repository and watch how they reason.
Hooks and effects
Include a search box whose useEffect fetches on every keystroke and occasionally shows stale results. A strong candidate spots the race condition, cancels outdated requests with an AbortController or an ignore flag, debounces input and explains the dependency array. The best ones also point out effects that should not exist at all, such as derived values that can simply be computed during render.
State design
Ask where each piece of state should live. Server data belongs in a fetching layer such as TanStack Query or framework loaders; shared client state may justify Zustand, Redux Toolkit or context; filters and pagination often belong in the URL. Watch for a single global store holding everything, or prop drilling through six layers.
Rendering performance
Hand them a list of several thousand rows that stutters while typing. Good answers start with the React DevTools Profiler, not guesses, then reach for virtualization, splitting a busy context, lazy loading routes or moving expensive work out of render. Blanket useMemo everywhere is a warning sign.
Testing
Ask for one meaningful test. Expect React Testing Library queries by role and label, user-event for interactions, network mocking at the boundary with a tool like MSW, and a view on where Playwright end-to-end tests earn their keep. A suite made only of snapshots tells you the habit is shallow.
What a paid trial should look like
A trial is the most reliable evidence you will get before committing. Keep it real, short and fair to both sides.
- One genuine ticket. Choose an isolated feature or bug from your backlog, not a puzzle, sized for three to five working days.
- Safe access. A branch or sandbox repository with seed data. No production credentials.
- A written definition of done. Acceptance criteria, browsers to support, accessibility expectations and test coverage you expect.
- Daily async updates. You learn as much from how someone communicates a blocker as from the code.
- A review conversation. Walk through the pull request together and ask why each decision was made.
- Payment regardless of outcome. Unpaid trials filter out experienced engineers who have options.
Red flags during interviews and trials
- They cannot explain why a component re-rendered, or which prop or state change caused it.
- Every data flow goes through useEffect to keep two pieces of state in sync.
- Accessibility is an afterthought: clickable divs, missing labels, no keyboard focus handling.
- They have never broken production, or will not describe how they handled it when they did.
- The vendor quietly swaps the person who passed the trial for someone else after signing.
If you would rather hand over an outcome than manage a hire, iJurug Soft runs React front ends as fixed-milestone projects, with senior engineers on every engagement and long-term support after launch. Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to hire React developers in India?
With a clear role description, a screening call, a skills test and a one-week paid trial, most teams can reach a decision within a few weeks. Delays usually come from a vague role, not from a shortage of candidates.
Should a React developer also know Next.js?
If your product is server-rendered or SEO-sensitive, yes. Routing, data fetching, caching and Server Components in the App Router are distinct skills, and they should be tested separately from core React.
How do time zones work with a team in India?
India Standard Time is UTC+5:30. European teams get a comfortable shared afternoon; US teams usually agree on a short daily overlap and lean on written updates, recorded demos and well-written tickets for the rest.
Can a trial turn into a long-term engagement?
It should. Agree up front that the person who completes the trial is the person who joins, and that the trial code is yours whatever you decide.
