Enterprise Java work comes in two broad shapes: connecting new capabilities to systems that already run the business, and building new services from a clean slate. To hire Java developers in India who succeed at either, assess Spring Boot depth, microservice judgment and JVM tuning, then weight those skills toward the shape of work you actually have.
Integration work versus greenfield services
Both jobs use Java and Spring, yet they reward different instincts. Mixing them up is a common reason an otherwise strong hire struggles.
Enterprise integration
Here the developer connects to ERPs, core banking or policy systems, message brokers such as IBM MQ or Kafka, SOAP services, batch file exchanges and identity providers. Success means respecting contracts you cannot change, handling partial failure gracefully and keeping data consistent across systems that were never designed to talk to each other. Tools like Spring Integration, Apache Camel and Spring Batch are common, and patience with legacy documentation is a genuine skill.
Greenfield services
Here the developer designs new domain models, APIs and data stores. Success means clear service boundaries, contract-first APIs, sensible use of events and a codebase the next team can extend. Domain-driven design vocabulary and strong opinions about testing tend to show up in good greenfield engineers.
Which one is your role?
List the systems the new hire will touch in their first quarter. If most already exist and belong to other teams, you are hiring for integration. If most will be created, you are hiring for greenfield. Still unsure? Walk us through the landscape and we will help you frame the role.
Spring Boot skills that matter in 2026
Spring Boot has become the default foundation for new enterprise Java services. Spring Boot 3 moved to the Jakarta EE namespace and requires Java 17 or later, and the newer 4.x line continues on that foundation, so upgrades from Spring Boot 2 are a project in their own right. Probe for:
- Configuration discipline: profiles, externalized configuration and secrets pulled from a vault rather than property files in the repository.
- Data access: Spring Data JPA with an understanding of lazy loading, fetch joins, transaction boundaries and when plain SQL through JdbcClient is clearer.
- Security: Spring Security with OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect, method-level authorization and safe handling of tokens between services.
- Testing: slice tests, integration tests with Testcontainers against real databases and brokers, and contract tests between services.
- Modern Java: records, sealed types, pattern matching and virtual threads on Java 21 or the newer Java 25 LTS, including where virtual threads help (blocking I/O) and where they do not (CPU-bound work).
Microservices judgment, not just microservices vocabulary
Anyone can draw boxes. Senior engineers can explain when not to split a service. Ask candidates how they would handle these situations:
Consistency without distributed transactions
Expect the transactional outbox pattern, idempotent consumers, sagas for multi-step business processes and a clear explanation of what the user sees while the system is temporarily inconsistent.
Resilience and observability
Timeouts on every remote call, retries with backoff, circuit breakers through Resilience4j, and tracing with OpenTelemetry or Micrometer so one slow downstream call can be found in minutes. If you are breaking up an older system, our guide to migrating a legacy monolith to microservices and our piece on event-driven architecture cover the design choices in more depth.
JVM tuning: the senior-only skill
Production Java problems often surface as memory pressure, garbage collection pauses or thread starvation. A senior developer should be able to:
- Size the heap correctly inside containers, using settings such as MaxRAMPercentage rather than fixed values copied from an old server.
- Choose between G1, the default collector, and ZGC for latency-sensitive services, and read GC logs to justify the change.
- Capture and interpret Java Flight Recorder recordings, thread dumps and heap dumps.
- Explain start-up and memory trade-offs of options such as class data sharing or GraalVM native images.
Ask for a story about a production incident they diagnosed. Specifics about tools and evidence matter more than the outcome. Vague answers such as "we increased the memory" usually mean someone else did the diagnosis.
How to hire Java developers in India: an assessment by work type
Use one common screening call, then branch the practical exercise.
For integration roles
Provide a mock SOAP or file-based upstream system and a Kafka topic. Ask for a Spring service that consumes, transforms and delivers messages, with retries, a dead-letter path and duplicate handling. Review how they document assumptions about the legacy contract, and whether they ask who to contact when the upstream behaves differently from its specification. In integration work, that instinct to ask early saves weeks.
For greenfield roles
Ask for a small domain service with a REST API, persistence, one domain event and tests. Discuss the boundaries they chose and how the design would evolve as requirements grow.

Frequently asked questions
Which Java version should candidates know?
Java 21 is widely used in production, and Java 25 is the newest long-term support release. Candidates should know both well and be able to plan an upgrade from Java 8 or 11.
Do I need Kotlin developers instead?
Kotlin works well with Spring and many teams mix the two. If your codebase is Java, hire for Java and treat Kotlin as a bonus.
Can I hire Java developers in India to work alongside my in-house architects?
Yes, and it often works well. Agree on who owns architecture decisions, how designs are reviewed and which overlap hours are fixed, so remote engineers are part of the conversation rather than receiving finished specifications.
How long does an enterprise Java onboarding take?
It depends on documentation and environment access. Prepare test environments, credentials and a system map before day one, and onboarding moves far faster.
