Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of making your brand the source that AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews retrieve, quote and recommend. For businesses in India it rests on three things: pages those systems can crawl and parse, content with clear claims worth citing, and a consistent brand entity the wider web vouches for.
How generative engines pick the sources they cite
When someone asks an assistant "which ERP partners in Pune work with mid-sized manufacturers?", most answer engines do not rely on memory alone. They run live searches, pull a handful of pages, and write a summary with links to the pages they used. The term GEO itself comes from a 2023 academic paper that tested how content changes affect visibility inside these summaries.
Three filters decide whether you appear:
- Retrieval — is your page in the index the engine searches, and does it rank well enough for the sub-queries the model generates?
- Extraction — can the model lift a clean, self-contained statement from your page?
- Trust — does the engine have reason to believe your brand is a credible source on this topic?

Retrieval: the technical groundwork for GEO
You cannot be cited if you cannot be fetched. Many GEO problems turn out to be technical SEO problems:
- Crawler access — check robots.txt and your CDN or firewall for rules blocking agents such as OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Bingbot. Aggressive bot protection can block them without anyone noticing. Decide separately on training crawlers like GPTBot and Google-Extended, which govern model training rather than search.
- Rendered content — pages that only reveal text after heavy JavaScript execution are often read as empty. Server-side rendering or static generation fixes this; see our guide to technical SEO for JavaScript sites.
- Bing indexing — several assistants draw on Bing's index, so verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit sitemaps there too.
- Classic rankings — pages ranking on the first pages of Google and Bing are far more likely to be retrieved. GEO builds on SEO; it does not replace it.
Extraction: writing content a model can quote
Generative engines favour passages that stand on their own. A paragraph that begins "As mentioned above, this is why it matters" is useless out of context. Write so that any section could be lifted into an answer intact.
Patterns that get cited
Definitions and direct answers
Open key sections with a one or two sentence answer, then expand. Name the subject explicitly rather than relying on "it" or "this".
Specific, verifiable claims
Concrete statements — the regulation that applies, the steps in a process, the trade-off between two approaches — are more quotable than adjectives. Where you have original data, such as survey results or benchmarks you measured yourself, publish the method alongside it.
Comparisons and criteria
Buyers ask assistants to compare options. Pages that lay out selection criteria honestly, including when your own offering is not the right fit, match that query shape.
What does not work
Hidden prompts, keyword-stuffed "LLM pages", and hundreds of thin location pages are either ignored or treated as spam. Engines increasingly cross-check claims, so fabricated statistics can undermine trust in the whole domain.
Trust: entities and authority signals
Models reason about entities — your company, your founders, your products — and how consistently the web describes them.
- Consistent facts — the same name, founding year, location and service description on your website, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, directories and press mentions.
- Organization and Person schema — with sameAs links to official profiles, so engines join the dots.
- Named expertise — author pages with real credentials behind your advice content.
- Third-party mentions — industry publications, podcasts, reviews on platforms like G2 or Clutch, and discussions on forums and Reddit are often the sources assistants cite when recommending vendors.
For Indian brands selling globally, this also means making sure your international pages describe you the same way your Indian pages do.
Measuring generative engine optimization in India
There is no Search Console for AI answers yet, so measurement is partly manual:
- Build a panel of 20 to 50 real buyer prompts and run them monthly across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI features, recording mentions, citations and competitor presence.
- In GA4, create a channel group for referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com.
- Ask new leads how they found you, and add an AI assistant option to any "how did you hear about us" field.
Answers vary between runs and users, so look at trends across the panel rather than any single response.
How iJurug Soft approaches GEO
Our GEO work sits inside our SEO and digital marketing services and draws on the same team that builds LLM and retrieval systems for clients, so we understand how retrieval-augmented answers are assembled from the inside. An engagement follows our Discover, Design, Build, Launch and grow process with fixed milestones: a baseline prompt audit, technical fixes for crawlability and rendering, content restructuring around buyer questions, entity clean-up, and monthly tracking. We do not promise placements inside any assistant, because no one controls those outputs; we improve the signals they depend on.
Frequently asked questions
Is GEO different from SEO?
It extends SEO. Rankings, crawlability and authority still matter; GEO adds attention to passage-level clarity, entity consistency and presence on the third-party sources assistants trust.
Should we block AI crawlers?
Blocking search-oriented crawlers removes you from their answers. Many businesses allow search crawlers while making a separate, deliberate choice about training crawlers.
Does GEO matter for B2B companies in India?
Very much. Procurement teams and founders increasingly ask assistants for vendor shortlists, so being described accurately in those answers is part of being considered at all.
