Answer Engine Optimization in India: A Query-by-Query Plan

iJurug Soft2026-09-255 min read

Answer engine optimization (AEO) means shaping your pages so Google's featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, AI Overviews and voice assistants can lift a precise answer from them. For Indian businesses it comes down to answer-first writing, headings that mirror real questions, schema that describes content honestly, and matching the way people in India actually phrase queries.

Where answers appear and what each surface rewards

AEO is not one target. Each surface pulls answers differently:

The common thread: a concise, correct answer placed where a machine can find it, on a page that already ranks reasonably well. If you would like us to check which of your target questions are winnable, send us your key topics and competitors.

Answer engine optimization in India, one query type at a time

The most reliable method is to classify target questions by type and format each one the way answer surfaces prefer.

"What is" and definition queries

Put a 40 to 60 word definition directly under a heading that repeats the question. Start with the subject ("A GST e-invoice is…"), avoid preamble, then add depth below. This is the format most often lifted into snippets.

"How to" and process queries

Use a numbered list with each step starting with a verb. Keep steps parallel and complete, and include the step count in the introduction. Google retired HowTo rich results in 2023, so the list itself, not the markup, earns the placement.

Comparison and "vs" queries

State the verdict first ("Choose X when…, choose Y when…"), then lay out criteria in a consistent order. On your own site a real HTML table works well for these, because snippets frequently render tables.

Local and voice queries

How Indians phrase spoken questions

Voice queries are longer and conversational, and in India often mix English with Hindi or a regional language ("best time to visit Coorg in monsoon or not"). Include natural phrasings in FAQs and consider dedicated Hindi or regional-language pages where your audience searches that way.

Local answer signals

For "near me" and city queries, answers draw heavily on Google Business Profile data, so keep hours, categories and services accurate and consistent with your site. Our guide to local SEO in Bangalore covers this in more depth.

A worked example: rewriting one answer

Imagine a Pune accounting firm whose page on GST registration opens with two paragraphs about the firm's history before mentioning GST at all. No answer engine will extract that. The rewrite adds a heading, "Who needs GST registration in India?", followed immediately by a short, precise answer: who must register, the current turnover thresholds, and the special cases such as inter-state suppliers and e-commerce sellers. Below that sit a numbered list of registration steps and a short section on documents. The facts did not change; their order and clarity did. That rewrite is typical of AEO work: most gains come from restructuring pages you already have.

Schema: what it does and does not do for AEO

Structured data helps engines understand what a page contains, but its visible rewards have narrowed. Since August 2023, Google shows FAQ rich results mainly for well-known government and health sites. So:

Schema supports AEO; clear writing and ranking do the heavy lifting.

Page structure that makes answers easy to extract

Beyond individual answers, the page itself should be easy for a machine to parse:

  1. One topic per page, with a logical heading hierarchy (H2 for each question, H3 for sub-points).
  2. Answer immediately below each heading, then elaborate.
  3. Short paragraphs, lists where content is genuinely list-like, and consistent terminology.
  4. Content visible in the initial HTML rather than hidden behind tabs that load on click.
  5. Visible author and last-updated date, especially for finance, health and legal topics.

Many of these checks overlap with a standard technical SEO audit, which is often the right first step.

Measuring answer visibility

Search Console does not label snippet wins directly, but you can infer them: track target queries, watch for pages whose impressions jump while average position sits near the top, and spot-check the results pages. Third-party rank trackers record snippet and AI Overview ownership. Because answer surfaces can reduce clicks, also measure what matters downstream: branded search growth, enquiries and assisted conversions.

How we deliver AEO at iJurug Soft

AEO is part of our SEO and content services. Our Bangalore team, working since 2018 with senior people on every engagement, starts by mapping your buyers' questions, checks which answer surfaces exist for each, then restructures existing pages before writing new ones. Technical fixes such as rendering and schema are handled by engineers, not left as recommendations.

Frequently asked questions

How is AEO different from GEO?

AEO focuses on winning a specific extracted answer for a specific query. GEO is broader: how assistants describe and recommend your brand across many conversational prompts. The techniques overlap heavily.

It is harder, because snippets usually come from pages already ranking on page one. New sites should target specific, less competitive questions first.

Do answer surfaces reduce website traffic?

For simple facts, sometimes. For commercial questions, being the cited answer builds recognition and tends to bring better-qualified visitors.

Which pages should we optimise first?

Start with pages that already rank on page one for question-style queries. They are closest to winning an answer and need restructuring rather than new content.
