Hire VR Developers in India: A Screening Playbook

iJurug Soft2026-09-255 min read

To hire VR developers in India who can ship, screen for three things together: engine depth in Unity or Unreal, hands-on XR experience with real headsets, and judgement about comfort and interaction. Portfolios alone hide the difference, so ask candidates to explain frame budgets, locomotion choices and how they tested on device.

If you would rather have a vetted senior team than run the search yourself, outline your VR project for us and we will propose a delivery plan.

The skills stack to look for when you hire VR developers in India

Engine and language

Unity with C# remains the most common path for standalone headset apps, training simulations and enterprise tools. Unreal Engine with C++ and Blueprints suits projects needing high visual fidelity, often on PC VR. A strong developer knows one engine deeply and can explain why they would pick the other for a different brief.

XR frameworks

Look for experience with OpenXR, the cross-vendor standard, plus Unity's XR Interaction Toolkit or the platform SDKs from headset makers. For browser delivery, WebXR with Three.js or Babylon.js is a separate but related skill. Ask which devices they have personally deployed to and what broke when they did.

Performance on standalone hardware

Standalone headsets run on mobile chipsets and must hold a steady frame rate, typically 72 or 90 frames per second, to avoid discomfort. Candidates should talk fluently about draw calls, batching, texture compression, baked lighting, level of detail, fixed foveated rendering and profiling tools. A developer who has only built for PC VR may underestimate these limits.

Supporting skills

Basic 3D pipeline knowledge (importing from Blender or CAD, fixing scale and pivots), shader literacy, multiplayer networking for shared sessions, and back-end integration for analytics or LMS reporting all matter on business projects.

Judging comfort and interaction design

A VR app can be technically correct and still make users feel ill or confused. This is where experienced developers stand apart.

Comfort

Ask how they handle movement. Good answers mention teleport and snap-turn as defaults, optional smooth locomotion with a comfort vignette, never moving the camera without user input, and keeping the horizon stable. They should know that frame drops, not only movement, cause discomfort.

Interaction

Ask them to walk through grabbing, using and releasing an object. Listen for hand presence, haptic feedback, clear affordances such as highlighted grab points, and how they support both controllers and hand tracking. UI placement matters too: menus should sit at a comfortable distance and follow the user without jitter.

A practical screening exercise

Give shortlisted candidates a small, time-boxed task: a room where the user teleports to a table, picks up a tool, and operates a lever with feedback, running on a standalone headset. Review the build on the device, then review the code. You will learn more from twenty minutes wearing their build than from an hour of interview questions.

Freelancer, in-house hire or studio team?

Each model suits a different situation.

If Unity is your chosen engine, our separate guide to hiring Unity developers in India covers engine-specific screening in more depth.

What to prepare before you start hiring

Candidates give sharper answers, and quotes become comparable, when your brief is specific. Before the first conversation, write down:

A one-page brief like this also helps you spot candidates who ask good questions rather than simply agreeing to everything.

Red flags during evaluation

Also check what happens after launch. Headset operating systems and SDKs update frequently, and an app nobody maintains can stop working after a platform change.

Working with iJurug Soft on VR

iJurug Soft is a Bangalore software studio, founded in 2018, that delivers AR/VR development for clients worldwide. We put senior engineers on every engagement and run projects through Discover, Design, Build, Launch and grow with fixed milestones and a transparent process. Performance and security are part of the build rather than an afterthought, and we offer long-term support once the app is live. For training projects in particular, our article on designing presence for corporate VR training explains how we decide how immersive an experience needs to be.

Frequently asked questions

Should my VR project use Unity or Unreal?

Unity is usually the practical choice for standalone headsets, training and enterprise apps. Unreal suits photoreal visualisation on PC VR. The target device and visual bar decide it more than developer preference.

How do I test a VR developer's skill quickly?

Set a small on-device task involving teleport, grabbing and a UI panel, then try the build yourself. Comfort, responsiveness and code clarity will be obvious within minutes.

Who should own the code and assets?

You should. Make sure the contract assigns source code, 3D assets and store listings to your company, with repositories under your organisation's accounts.
