Hire GCP Engineers in India: A Screening Scorecard

iJurug Soft2026-09-255 min read

To hire GCP engineers in India who will hold up in production, screen for three things: fluency with the Google Cloud services your product actually uses, disciplined infrastructure as code, and a security mindset built around IAM and networking. Badges help, but the scorecard below will tell you far more about who can run your workloads safely.

Short on time? Tell us what you run on Google Cloud and our engineers can start on the work while you hire for the long term.

Know which GCP engineer you need

Google Cloud roles tend to split three ways, and one person rarely excels at all of them:

Decide which profile matters most for the next twelve months, then weight the scorecard accordingly. If you need someone to shape the whole platform rather than operate it, our guide to hiring cloud architects in India is a better starting point.

A screening scorecard to hire GCP engineers in India

Rate each area from one to four during interviews. Anyone scoring low on IAM or IaC is a risk for production, regardless of other strengths.

Area 1: Resource hierarchy and IAM

Prompt: "Design the organisation, folders and projects for a company with three products and dev, staging and prod environments."

A strong answer uses folders per environment or business unit, separate projects per workload and environment, groups rather than individual bindings, and organisation policies to restrict things like external IP addresses or service account key creation. They should explain why basic roles such as Editor are dangerous and how predefined or custom roles fix that.

The service account test

Ask how a GKE workload or a GitHub Actions pipeline should authenticate to GCP. The correct direction is Workload Identity Federation (or Workload Identity for GKE), not downloaded JSON keys that end up in repositories and chat messages. Candidates who default to key files have not worked in a security-conscious environment.

Area 2: Networking

Probe Shared VPC versus separate VPCs, Private Service Connect and Private Google Access, Cloud NAT, firewall policies, and when to use an external versus internal load balancer. Ask how they would connect an on-premises data centre in Mumbai to GCP: Cloud VPN for a start, Cloud Interconnect when bandwidth and latency demand it.

Area 3: Compute and services fluency

Present a workload and ask them to choose a platform:

Good candidates explain trade-offs around cold starts, regional availability in asia-south1 (Mumbai) and asia-south2 (Delhi), and operational load.

Area 4: Infrastructure as code

Ask them to walk through a Terraform repository they maintained: module structure, remote state in Cloud Storage, how plans are reviewed, and how they handle drift. Bonus points for policy checks in CI and for knowing how to import existing resources safely.

Area 5: Security and operations

Look for Secret Manager usage, Cloud KMS and customer-managed encryption keys where required, VPC Service Controls for sensitive data, Security Command Center findings triage, and audit log sinks to a locked-down project. For operations, they should know Cloud Monitoring and Logging well enough to write alerting policies and log-based metrics, and understand how to budget and label projects for cost visibility. Evidence beats claims

A useful final round is a short design review: share a simplified architecture diagram of your own system and ask the candidate what they would change first and why. Their priorities reveal whether they think about security, cost and operability together, or only about the parts they enjoy.

Google Cloud certifications, such as Associate Cloud Engineer or Professional Cloud Architect, show structured study. Treat them as a positive signal, not a filter. Stronger evidence includes:

  1. A clear story of a production incident on GCP and what they changed afterwards.
  2. A quota or regional capacity problem they worked around.
  3. Costs they reduced through rightsizing, committed use or storage lifecycle rules.
  4. A migration they took part in, from on-premises or another cloud.

When a partner makes more sense than a hire

Hiring a senior GCP engineer in Bangalore or Hyderabad can take months. If you are migrating, launching a new platform or cleaning up a sprawling project structure, bringing in an experienced team first often gives you a better foundation to hire into.

iJurug Soft covers Google Cloud as part of our cloud management and DevOps services, alongside AWS, Azure and Kubernetes. Working from Bangalore since 2018, our senior engineers lead every engagement through Discover, Design, Build and Launch and grow, with fixed milestones. We can set up your landing zone, write the Terraform, harden IAM and networking, then help you interview candidates against the same scorecard and hand over cleanly.

Frequently asked questions

Is AWS experience transferable to GCP?

Core concepts transfer well, but IAM, the project model and networking differ enough that you should test GCP-specific knowledge directly rather than assume it.

How long does it take for a new GCP engineer to become productive?

With clean IaC and documentation, experienced engineers contribute within weeks. Undocumented, console-built environments slow everyone down, which is a good reason to fix foundations early.

What drives the cost of engaging GCP engineers?

Scope, number of projects and environments, migration complexity, compliance needs and ongoing support hours. We don't publish rates; share your requirements and we will give you a clear quote.
