Cloud Migration Services in India: A Vendor-Neutral Plan

iJurug Soft2026-10-105 min read

Reliable cloud migration services in India begin with a plan that is not tied to one provider. Assess every application, give each one a migration strategy, choose the target cloud on evidence, move in small waves with a rehearsed rollback, and switch on cost controls before the first workload goes live. Skipped steps resurface later as outages or runaway bills.

Already have a migration plan and want it stress-tested? Share your inventory or architecture notes and we will flag the riskiest assumptions first.

Step 1: Assess before choosing anything

A migration is only as good as its inventory. For each application, record:

Group applications that talk to each other heavily. Migrating half of a chatty pair and leaving the other half on-premises is a classic cause of latency surprises.

Step 2: Apply the 6 Rs of cloud migration

Every workload gets one strategy. The common framework has six options, and AWS adds a seventh, relocate, for moving whole platforms such as VMware environments as they are.

Rehost (lift and shift)

Move the virtual machine unchanged. It is the fastest route out of a data center, but inefficiencies come along, so schedule right-sizing soon after.

Replatform

Make small changes for real gains, such as moving a self-managed database onto a managed service or containerizing an app without rewriting it.

Refactor or re-architect

Rebuild around containers, serverless functions or managed services. It takes the most effort and pays off over the longest horizon, so reserve it for systems that differentiate your business.

Repurchase, retire and retain

Swap commodity systems for SaaS, switch off applications nobody uses, and deliberately keep some workloads on-premises for now. Retiring unused applications is often the quickest win an assessment uncovers.

Step 3: Choose the target cloud on evidence

All three major providers run multiple regions in India, for example AWS in Mumbai and Hyderabad, Microsoft Azure in Pune and Chennai, and Google Cloud in Mumbai and Delhi; check each provider's current region list, because new ones keep opening. Regions matter for latency to Indian users and for data residency, including the Reserve Bank of India's requirement that payment system data be stored in India and obligations under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.

Factors that should decide it

Once the target is clear, the provider-specific work diverges. We cover it in depth for AWS migration, Azure migration and GCP migration, including each provider's own tooling.

Step 4: Plan cutover waves and rollback

Move in waves, from low risk to business critical:

  1. Pilot wave: one or two non-critical applications that prove the landing zone, networking, identity and monitoring.
  2. Early waves: internal tools and stateless services, where short downtime is tolerable.
  3. Core waves: customer-facing systems and primary databases, each with a rehearsed runbook.

What every cutover runbook needs

Rollback is a plan, not a hope

Define the trigger, such as error rates, failed transactions or data mismatches, the window in which rollback stays possible, and how writes made in the cloud flow back to the source if you reverse. Rehearse it at least once on a non-production copy.

Step 5: Put FinOps in place before the first bill

Lift-and-shift mistakes compound because over-provisioned instances, idle environments and unexpected data transfer charges repeat every month. Before migrating, set up tagging by team and application, budgets with anomaly alerts, and a regular review rhythm. After each wave, right-size instances, and consider commitment models, such as reservations and savings plans on AWS and Azure or committed use on Google Cloud, only once usage is stable. What to expect from cloud migration services in India

Whoever you hire, the deliverables should be tangible and yours to keep. Look for an assessment report with a strategy per application, a landing zone defined as infrastructure as code, wave plans and cutover runbooks, test evidence for each wave, and documentation your team can operate from. Ask how the partner handles security baselines, backup and disaster recovery in the new environment, because those rarely transfer automatically from the old one.

Migration is also the moment to decide who runs the platform afterward. iJurug Soft works across AWS, GCP and Azure with Kubernetes and DevOps, and our guide to choosing a cloud managed services provider explains what ongoing operations should include.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a cloud migration take?

It depends on the number of applications, their dependencies, data volumes and how much refactoring you choose. A proper assessment produces a realistic timeline, wave by wave.

Is lift and shift a mistake?

Not by itself. Rehosting is often right when you need to leave a data center quickly. The mistake is stopping there without right-sizing or modernizing the workloads that need it.

Can we keep some systems on-premises?

Yes. Hybrid setups are common, especially for latency-sensitive plant systems or software with restrictive licenses. Plan secure connectivity and a shared identity layer from the start.

Do we need a migration partner if we have an IT team?

Not always. Many teams bring in a partner for the assessment, landing zone and first waves, then run later waves themselves using the runbooks created together.
